Brown & Root successfully completed the construction and commissioning of a key renewable diesel refinery expansion project for a significant customer 90 days ahead of schedule, exceeding the customers delivery expectations while meeting safety and quality targets!

This important renewable energy refinery expansion project has been a key success by allowing Brown & Root’s customer to advance their position in the energy transition marketplace.

The newly expanded 290 million-gallon-per-year renewable diesel plant processes recycled animal fats, used cooking oil and inedible corn oil into renewable diesel fuel while meeting the most stringent low-carbon fuel standards.

Scope of Work

Brown & Root’s scope consisted of Managing the Ecofiner and RGU units in a phase of construction and execution. 

Responsibilities included but were not limited to the following:

  • Project controls
  • Schedule
  • Subcontracts management
  • Logistic support and Materials Management
  • Structural Steel
  • Piping
  • Equipment installation
  • Painting
  • Scaffolding
  • Insulation
  • Fireproofing
  • Equipment Installation

*Equipment Installation includes compressors, reciprocating and centrifrugal, pump installation, tank and various 110’ reactors.

Challenges

  • Late equipment deliverables – Brown & Root adjusted our execution strategy to out of sequence tasks to maintain schedule due to large pump skids not arriving until the very end of the project. 
  • Stringent quality requirements on the project that facilitated additional coordination with various parties.

Major Accomplishments

  • Accelerated completion – 3 months ahead of schedule
  • Percent of Self Performed Work: 95%
  • Outstanding Performance (Safety, Quality, Budget/Cost, Schedule)
  • ABC Construction Award of Excellence within Revenue Class
